Free agent shortstop Willy Adames has signed a seven-year, $182 million deal with the San Francisco Giants, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan first reported Saturday.
The deal marks the biggest deal in franchise history, surpassing Buster Posey‘s $163 million deal he signed in 2013. Ironically enough, Posey, the first-year Giants president of baseball operations, is now the one who signed Adames.
Adames, who turned 29-years-old in September, was arguably the top shortstop on the free agent market that included Ha-Seong Kim, Jose Iglesias, Paul DeJong and Amed Rosario, among others. It wasn’t a deep class at all.
He was coming off a career season with the Milwaukee Brewers, clobbering 32 home runs with 112 RBIs with a .251/.331/.462 slash line across 688 plate appearances. His .794 OPS and 118 OPS+ were the third-highest marks of his career, failing to top his 2020 and 2021 seasons.
The Giants will now have one of the best defensive infields in baseball with Adames and Matt Chapman. Though for a franchise that’s struck out on multiple big-name free agents in the past, I’m fascinated by this route that they took–especially after they were planning on reducing payroll heading into the 2025 season. He’s had a solid bat, but not one that will translate to Oracle Park, even if the defense is significantly above-average.
The Giants did have a hole at shortstop entering the offseason, so that one is plugged now. They also have the rotation to address, as well as finding a backup catcher (or two), among other needs.
