Will Sean Payton Eventually End Up Coaching The Cowboys?

Sean Payton announced he was stepping away from the Saints, but it just doesn’t feel like we have seen the last of him. Maybe Payton has a future in TV. Maybe Payton will return to coaching. However, it does feel like a connection between Payton and the Dallas Cowboys is brewing.

Jerry Jones always described Payton as “the one that got away”. Payton was the offensive coordinator in Dallas during the Bill Parcells era. Oddly enough, Mike Zimmer was the defensive coordinator and is also out of a job currently for a different reason.

For now, it appears that Mike McCarthy is going to be back. Dan Quinn already removed himself from head coaching consideration this season. Kellen Moore will be brought back IF he doesn’t get another head job instead. With all that going on, the Payton rumors likely won’t go away as it feels like only a matter of time before he’s on the Cowboys sidelines.

VIA Kimberly Martin of ESPN:

“Regardless of the Sean Payton of it all, Mike McCarthy was going to enter this season looking over his shoulder,” Martin said. “If Jerry (Jones) said, ‘He’s our coach, he’s our guy,’ every week, wouldn’t we question it anyway depending on how this team does? That was the problem of these two seasons. The first year not being good, this season being a complete disappointment. So, yeah, regardless of Sean Payton, that was the issue. When I talked to people yesterday about Sean Payton and the Cowboys, I was immediately told, ‘Oh, he’s definitely going to end up in Dallas.’ League people believe he will definitely end up in Dallas. It’s a matter of when not if.”

Bold statement. If that’s the case, McCarthy is basically a dead man walking. Still, it’s hard to discount the chance Payton goes the TV route. They make a hell of a lot of money. Does Tony Romo seem miserable? We sure any of those high salary TV guys miss football?

It’s hard to blame Payton for walking away from the Saints. It turns out life sucks without Drew Brees. Life sucks even more knowing the whole Taysom Hill thing wasn’t a joke. Maybe we will see Payton coaching Dak Prescott sooner rather than later. Payton is also under contract with the Saints adding more complexity to the situation.
