Will The Jaguars Bench Gardner Minshew?

Gardner Minshew is on the hot seat? The Jaguars enter Sunday 1-5 on the season and could wind up replacing their starting quarterback sooner rather than later. I had assumed that Minshew would keep the job throughout the 2020 season. That might not appear to be the case.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network has reported that if Minshew’s struggles continue, he could find his way on the bench:

“Minshew Mania could be coming to an end.

Jaguars starting quarterback Gardner Minshew is in danger of being benched if he continues to struggle, multiple sources say, and that could happen as soon as today against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The media darling who has become a cult hero in Jacksonville thanks to his mustache, quick wit and propensity for jorts could find himself replaced by backup Mike Glennon. At one point, it appeared Minshew may be the QB of the future in Jacksonville. Much of that is in doubt now, unless he can play his way out of it.”

There is no guarantee Minshew gets benched, but a subpar performance against the Chargers could start his demise. Jacksonville has lost five straight after their Week 1 win. Minshew’s pure numbers aren’t terrible, but most of his production has gone while trailing.

From this report’s sound, it looks like Mike Glennon will get the first shot off the bench. I’m not sure what that accomplishes, but okay. Glennon has mostly been a career backup outside of his rookie season in Tampa.

The more interesting note is that Jake Luton could see some action eventually. The Oregon State product is an exciting prospect. Jacksonville drafted Luton in the sixth round in 2020, and he checks in at 6-foot-6. Luton may be worth a look regardless to see what you have.
