Wil Lutz traded to Broncos
The Denver Broncos have bolstered their special teams by acquiring kicker Wil Lutz from the New Orleans Saints, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday.
Lutz, a seasoned player with a reputation for clutch performances, brings a new level of reliability to the Broncos’ kicking game. With his impressive track record, he has shown himself capable of making kicks under pressure, making him an invaluable asset for the Broncos as they navigate tight games.
Sean Payton was undoubtedly heavily influential in acquiring the 29-year-old kicker. Lutz has spent his whole career (since 2016) in New Orleans, where Payton had coached for 15 years.
When used correctly, kickers can become weapons in an offense. Look at Justin Tucker and Evan McPherson as examples. In the six seasons with New Orleans, Lutz averaged an 84.6 field goal percentage, though is coming off the worst year of his career, where he made only 74.2 percent (23-31) of his field goals.
Wil Lutz ranks among the NFL’s most precise kickers within 40 yards. Out of 81 attempts from this range, he has only faltered on four occasions, boasting an impressive 95 percent success rate.
The Georgia State product also brings a monster right leg to Denver, boasting a career-long 59-yard field goal. Who knows what number he could reach up in the Mile High elevation?
The 2022 Broncos offense struggled significantly, plagued by inconsistency and lack of execution. Hindered by quarterback issues and a disjointed game plan, their scoring output faltered. Their inability to find a rhythm led to frequent stalled drives and a subpar points tally. The season underscored the pressing need for strategic reevaluation and player development to bounce back effectively.
