Why Turning Rafael Devers Into A Full-Time DH Would Be A Mistake

The talk about Rafael Devers turning into a full-time DH is incredibly stupid and would be a giant mistake by the organization.

Why Turning Rafael Devers Into A Full-Time DH Would Be A Mistake

Rafael Devers is the third baseman for the Boston Red Sox and if you have a different opinion I question your overall intelligence level.

Throw your stupid arguments out the window because they don’t matter. This decision boils down to one important factor and it’s not arguable.

Devers is far too young to be encouraged to be fat and lazy. End of story. No other talking point is relevant.

Devers is 28 and in the prime of his career. The moment you make him the DH there is no turning back. He’s way too young to be encouraged to be fat and lazy. He’s already on the chubby side as it is. Under no circumstance does it benefit the player to be encouraged to not be engaged in the game at this young of an age. Keeping Devers young and agile is far more important than the occasional error he makes.

It’s one thing to make him the DH in a postseason game than to do it every single game over the course of the 162 game season. A way different conversation. He’s way too young to be told to sit on the bench every game while taking four at-bats over the course of three hours. Can’t happen. Not for the money you’re paying him. Fat and lazy combined with that money can sink this puppy in a hurry.

By the way, it’s not like Devers can’t field. Right here is a video. Anybody who straight up sucks at fielding can’t make some of the plays Devers has. It’s mostly inconsistency and mental laps. Guess what… if you make the team more competitive maybe some of those mental errors go away. Based on how little the Red Sox tried to make the team competitive over the last two years, I’d make mistakes too.

Also, the Red Sox have Masataka Yoshida and DFA’ing him can’t be an option. Yoshida deserves another chance to prove he can do that job. The best lineup the Sox can sport consists of Yoshida at DH, Devers at third, and new addition Alex Bregman at second.

This is also baseball. One way or another, this is going to get itself worked out. Trevor Story is probably the one who needs to prove he isn’t washed. Let’s talk about if the shortstop job is up for grabs before we talk about whether the best third baseman in the entire sport is a problem.

If you’re signing/trading for Vlad, let’s revisit this conversation then. Until then, I don’t want to hear another word about this Devers DH thing. Shove the metrics up you know where. Encouraging Devers to be a non-athlete is as stupid as it gets and anybody in favor of this never played sports in their life.
