Why James Franklin Is NOT Overrated

James Franklin is not overrated. He’s not underrated either. What if I told you that James Franklin was the most perfectly rated coach in all of college football?

I know what you’re thinking already.

“Trey… stop hitting us with the clickbait cheese. Don’t sit here and defend Franklin. His teams at Penn State come up short over and over again”.

I don’t disagree with you. They do always seem to come up short. However, I would just counter and say that you haven’t had a real conversation with yourself about expectations.

James Franklin is 3-17 against top-ten teams. Not great, I know. However, the oddsmakers only had him as a favorite in one of those 20 games. A game they ended up winning. He won two of those games as an underdog.

What exactly is your complaint? That he’s not winning more games that nobody expects him to win? Congratulations. Thank you for proving why your own point is invalid. Franklin is 86-38 as things stand currently while being in the midst of his 10th year at Penn State. He’s 4-17 against Michigan and Ohio State. He’s beating the brakes off of basically everyone else in the conference.

What’s overrated about the guy? He’s consistently losing to the teams that he should. He’s consistently beating the teams he should. The only problem is the expectations that you have in your own head. Maybe he should beat good teams more frequently. I’m not arguing with you on that. I just think we have to be very careful calling Franklin an overrated coach when the truth of the matter is he’s doing exactly what he’s paid to do every year. Penn State shouldn’t beat Michigan or Ohio State at a consistent rate. He’s a solid B-level coach who’s simply doing his job. All I ask is that you don’t hate him for it.
