Why Haven’t The Steelers Re-Signed Justin Fields Yet?

There’s a weird corner of Pittsburgh Steelers fans who don’t want Justin Fields to come back and be the starter for this team in 2025. Those fans are morons. I hate to be the one to break it to you, but Fields not only makes the most sense for this team but is also the best available option out there. Yet, for some reason, the Steelers and Mike Tomlin, who should be long gone by this point, are dragging their feet on the move.

Do I need to remind everyone that Justin Fields was 4-2 as the starter before he was wrongfully benched for that bum Russell Wilson? How anyone could make the decision to bench a winning quarterback is beyond me. The fanbase loved Fields, he showed flashes of the player he could become and is young enough to still build around. Keep in mind that he has four years of experience in the NFL and just turned 25 years old today (happy birthday Justin!)

This decision isn’t a hard one. What other alternatives are out there? Blow all the cap space on Sam Darnold? Bring back Wilson? Try to resurrect the career of Aaron Rodgers? Should the franchise move up to get Cam Ward or redacted, I mean Shedeur Sanders? Take a flier on Jaxson Dart? Ok, the last option could still be on the table even if you sign Fields. The point remains that Fields is far and away the best-case scenario for the Steelers if they want to have a chance to be relevant and successful in 2025.

Justin Fields was on pace for a career year in completion percentage and passing yards, but no god forbid we bring back the 25-year-old who was bound for his best year as a pro. Simply can’t do it according to some Steelers fans. It’s not like the contract would even be that bad. Do you mean to tell me a two-year deal for $40 million doesn’t get it done? $20 million a year would rank 20th in the NFL, for what it’s worth. I would do that deal in a heartbeat.

Fields needs to be the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025, no questions asked. He is the most logical choice. If he pops and does have that career year and elevates the team, you know you have your guy with one last year of cap space before a fat extension. If he underwhelms, you’re only on the books for $20 million and can look to the 2026 NFL Draft which could be loaded at the quarterback position.

The mobile quarterback is the new wave in the NFL, and it’s adapt or die. Unfortunately for Steelers fans, Mike Tomlin is still stuck in the past and can’t change his offensive philosophy. Maybe by bringing back Justin Fields, that can start to change and this team can return to relevancy.
