Why Fantasy Football Managers Should Be Nervous About Colston Loveland?

I’m going to make this post a similar format to the one I just did about Kyle Monangai. I made an appearance on the Club Fantasy show and the conversation that was had about Loveland may have created the most interesting talking points for you the viewer to consider for the fantasy football road ahead. Yes, you should absolutely be nervous about the former Michigan tight end.

Blocking matters. It may not show up on the stat sheet, but in a transitive property sort of way, it sure does. We’ve seen two really big examples in recent history; one that I brought up, and a follow up by Ryan, which was just as accurate as it gets.

Why aren’t Kyle Pitts and Dalton Kincaid living up to expectations as former first round picks?

Blocking.

Defensive coordinators treat them as receivers, and it shows. It’s not about just the blocking. It’s about how the defensive coordinator has to think about defending the player. The more things to account for, the harder that job is. A tight end that can’t block… that DC is going to have an option on the roster to have that player covered with.

Let’s be real. If teams wanted a slot, they really had to decide between Loveland and Emeka Egbuka. It’s a matter of if you’re building a 12 team or not. The reality here with Loveland is that he’s a get in the way guy in terms of blocking. He had to do it at Michigan, but it wasn’t always pretty and doesn’t feel like it will hold up at the NFL level. He’s going to get subbed off the field in certain packages. It is what it is.

This is the point. If Pitts was supposed to break the mold… why is anyone expecting Loveland to do so when he’s not close to the level of athlete that Pitts showed at Florida?

By the way… I haven’t even gotten to the part where the Bears’ landing spot. Maybe the landing spot isn’t terrible if Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson hit. Even if that’s the case, there are way too many mouths to feed on this team. Where are the targets really coming from?

Warning: Do not pick Colston Loveland in the first round of your rookie draft. Take Elijah Arroyo two rounds later instead. Just remember to thank me when it comes true.
