As a 2020 second-round pick, Cole Kmet was an exciting prospect for the Bears. In 2020, his numbers were largely pedestrian (28 catches for 243 yards and 2 TDS), but he was fourth among TEs in true catch rate, a metric that tracks the number of receptions out of the number of catchable targets a player gets. His lackluster numbers were not the result of a lack of talent, but rather the Bears’ decision to have him learn and develop under Jimmy Graham. This year, however, he should be the TE1 and emerge as a reliable fantasy option in 2021.
The roster moves that the Bears have made put Kmet in a position to succeed. The obvious example is trading up to select Justin Fields, who has been hailed as one of the best picks in the draft. But Fields will have to sit and learn behind Andy Dalton, who the Bears signed in the offseason. Either way, both are substantial upgrades over Foles and Trubisky, so Kmet should have more targets come his way.
All that said, the main reason to get excited about Kmet is the lack of a solid WR behind Darnell Mooney and Allen Robinson on the Bears. It is unlikely that either Marquise Goodwin or Damiere Byrd emerge as an option ahead of Kmet. Therefore, he should be the third option in an offense that should progress with better QB play. Also, all the time he spent last season under the wing of Jimmy Graham will lead him to be a better route runner and receiver.
Sure, Kmet’s numbers were not great in 2020. But he showed flashes of promise, and this year he will have the TE1 role within a progressing offense. Better QB play, a lack of solid receivers, and his emerging skillset set Kmet up to be a reliable receiver for the Bears, and a reliable fantasy option for fantasy managers. He can and will produce on a weekly basis in 2021, so keep his name in mind for draft day.
