If you are like me, then you were surprised when you woke up Wednesday and saw the Mets signed Carlos Correa to a 12-year, $315 million contract. The Giants seemingly had him locked up and that was that.
But then, while most of America was asleep, ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez dropped the bombshell news, which was a huge gut punch for Giants fans everywhere. While the loss of Correa will certainly sting, it’s far from the first time the Giants have missed out on a big-time free agent.
Our journey starts at the Bryce Harper sweepstakes. The Giants were constantly rumored as a potential landing spot for Harper, and, at one point, were even the odds-on favorite to get him. They had the money to bring him in but ended up losing the bidding war to the Phillies.
In 2017, when the Marlins were looking to trade away MVP Slugger Giancarlo Stanton, the Giants quickly became the favorites to land him. A deal involving prospects, cash, and Joe Panik was rumored to have been on the table, although I doubt the Marlins would have ever taken that. Nevertheless, the Yankees swooped in and traded for the slugger having to only give up a couple of mid-level prospects.
This served as a blow for Giants fans who were struggling to score runs at the time and watched the Yankees give up nothing to bring him in. Stanton, who is also a California native, was rumored to have wanted to play on the west coast. But in typical Giants fashion, he was poached away leaving the Giants in the dust.
It hasn’t gotten better for them recently either. They missed out on signing Aaron Judge but not before being tricked by idiot Jon Heyman who incorrectly reported that the Giants had signed him. It just served as another heartbreak in a saga of failed free agency moments.
The Giants even made offers for Kodai Senga and Brandon Nimmo but ultimately lost out on both. Overall, it was a pretty bleak offseason for the Giants who were looking to spend big money. And then, the Correa news dropped. It was the move Giants fans were waiting for all season and in a flash, it was taken from them. Truly devastating.
In typical Giants fashion, the deal fell through, and Mets owner Steve Cohen wasted no time grabbing the superstar shortstop. I can’t help but feel bad for Giants fans. I know their fans have seen three rings since 2010, but since 2014, it’s been a cycle of mediocrity and failed attempts to bring in high-end talent.
Well, if you are a Giants fan you can take comfort in the fact that this has happened many times before. You certainly are used to missing out on big-name free agents. Regardless, this Correa news seems like it’ll sting just a little more. He was yours for a solid week and then out of nowhere, he wasn’t.
