From Blake Bortles to Mitch Trubisky to Nick Foles, the QB play that Allen Robinson has had is below average, and this subpar QB play is Robinson’s largest obstacle to being a top-five fantasy WR. Sure, many people acknowledge him as a top 20 WR, a high-end WR2, or a low-end WR1. He is often the 11th or 12th WR taken off of the board, but this year, Robinson will be a mid-end WR1 with upside to be a high-end WR1.
The most obvious reason is a new QB room, as the Bears traded up to draft Justin Fields with the 11th pick in the draft and signed Andy Dalton. Dalton is surely better than Foles and Trubisky and he will be able to hit Robinson with better throws, but the real reason to be excited about Robinson is not Dalton but Fields. Fields’ exceptional dual-threat talent will allow him to extend plays and find Robinson more frequently. Fields can also force defenses to game plan for him (when he starts), as his 4.4 40-yard time speaks for itself. This increased quality of QB play from Fields and Dalton will elevate Robinson’s target and catch numbers from past years.
Another big reason is the improved rushing attack for the Bears. After David Montgomery finished 2020 well, the Bears’ RB was bolstered further with the addition of Damien Williams and rookie Khalil Herbert as well as the return of Tarik Cohen from injury. The Bears improved rushing attack will give defenses something besides Robinson to consider. Allen Robinson should take advantage of this and produce big numbers in 2021.
Ryan Pace also worked to improve the Bears’ receiving room, as the lack of depth at the position cost them big in the Wild Card game against the Saints. But this offseason, Ryan Pace took major steps to address the position by signing Marquise Goodwin and Damiere Byrd, along with drafting Dazz Newsome. Cole Kmet has also been emerging and should be more of a factor in 2021. These pass-catchers will help stretch the field and make the offense more dynamic so defenses have to guard receivers not named Robinson, allowing Robinson in turn to secure more targets. Allen Robinson now not only has offensive support, but more capable receivers defenses have to keep an eye on so he can wreak havoc in 2021.
Surprisingly, the Bears have had a pretty impressive offseason, highlighted by the drafting of Justin Fields and Teven Jenkins. The one thing the Bears failed to do, however, was extend Robinson long-term, which is a shame because he is a superstar and easily the best offensive player for the Bears. Trust in Robinson, because he may just end up winning you your league next year.
