We’re back with another part of the “Who The Fuck Is That Guy” series. “Who The Fuck Is That Guy” is how we end every episode of the Vendetta Sports Fantasy Show on our Youtube Channel. Everyone gives a player that no one has ever heard of and no one will ever draft. Yet somehow, someway they will win you your fantasy league. Today we’re looking at Jake Luton. Luton is a quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Trey’s pick from episode 6.
Jake Luton was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 189th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He has prototypical quarterback size as he stands at 6’6, he also has some size weighing in at 224 pounds. He played college football at Idaho and Oregon State. His Vandals career lasted 1 season and his Beaver career lasted 3 seasons.
Jake Luton’s college career improved over time. He originally started at Idaho in 2015. During his freshman year, he played in 6 games. He completed 51 of 80 pass attempts for 403 yards, 1 touchdown, and 4 interceptions… yikes. He then transferred to Oregon State. In 2017 Luton only played in 4 games. During that time he completed 83 passes out of 135 attempts. He threw for 853 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. Improvement, but not inspiring yet. In 2018 Luton played in 8 games. He completed 140 passes out of 224 attempts. He collected 1660 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. Low interception numbers have been the definition of his college career. Finally, in 2019, Luton played in 11 games and completed 222 passes out of 358 attempts. He threw for 2714 yards and 28 touchdowns, both career highs. He also threw a career-low 3 interceptions. 28-3, sounds oddly familiar…
Jake Luton is a great decision-maker, with only 15 career college interceptions and 43 career passing touchdowns. He also adds value with his legs as well. In 2015 he ran for 5 touchdowns. Rushing ability is crucial to being a valuable fantasy quarterback, just look at Josh Allen. If Luton can get some rushing touchdowns on quarterback sneaks, he’s a great fantasy asset.
Jake Luton is currently listed as the 3rd string quarterback on the Jaguars depth chart. However, that won’t be the case for long. Gardner Minshew and Mike freaking Glennon are ahead of him. Mike Glennon won’t last long, so chalk Luton up to being the 2nd string quarterback. As for Minshew, there’s a chance the Jags bench him because he’s playing too well. Now before you unload on me for this and tell me “That makes no sense” hear me out. The Jaguars are a terrible team, they are rebuilding and damn close to tanking. There’s a great chance that they don’t see Minshew as the future and that they want Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields. The issue is, Minshew is too good to tank but not good enough to contend. The Jaguars can easily bench Minshew and put in Jake Luton in hopes of losing games to be put in a position to select a premier quarterback. It sounds weird but it’s entirely possible, think about the Colts the year Peyton Manning got hurt. Crappy quarterback play usually equals losses and a ticket to a high draft pick.
