The Chicago White Sox are officially waving the white flag. The team is floundering in the AL Central standings and sit 38-54 at the All-Star break. Good enough for eight games back of the first place Guardians. Keep in mind it would be worse in any other division. Management has seen enough and Chicago has declared themselves sellers at the 2023 MLB Trade Deadline.
VIA Jon Heyman at the NY Post:
“SEATTLE — The Chicago White Sox are opening up for business as a seller, according to sources, and they plan to seriously consider deals for all but four cornerstone players on their roster: Dylan Cease, Andrew Vaughn, Eloy Jimenez and of course All-Star Luis Robert Jr., who is second among AL position players in WAR (4.1) and under a reasonable contract through 2027, including two option years at $20 million per.”
“Free-agents-to-be Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez and Keynan Middleton are the most likely to go in trade, with Giolito, who will bring the most, expected to draw interest from the Reds, Rangers and others.”
Heyman also lists Michael Kopech and Yoan Moncada as unlikely to be traded as well. However, there is no mention of Tim Anderson is in the midst of a really down season. Anderson has a club option for $14 million next year. Maybe he’s been so bad that nobody wants anything to do with it?
The only problem with their stance is Chicago isn’t going to get any foundational pieces if they’re not willing to part with any of those core four. Giolito will command a decent size return but he’s also a pure rental which will hamper the asking price.
