Whit Merrifield Has An Incredible Nickname With The Phillies

Whit Merrifield signed a one-year contract with the Phillies on the cusp of Spring Training. If nicknames are any indication, Merrifield may have been destined to don a Phillies uniform. I’m not sure you can top this nickname.

As long as you spell Whit correctly, it doesn’t sound like the new Phillies infielder cares what you call him. The nickname is fantastic. If you’re not familiar with a Philly Cheesesteak, you order it whit onion or whiz without onion. It also sounds like Merrifield doesn’t like onions so we at least know his cheesteak order.

Merrifield, 35, is a really nice add for the Phillies. A guy who can be a jack of all trades and play all over the diamond. Any time one of the starters needs a rest, Merrifield will get the nod. Likely at third, short, second, and the corner outfield spots. To get a guy like Merrifield on the cheap as Spring Training opens is a win for the club.

Merrifield will earn $8 million during the duration of the contract. Philly has the option to extend it to a two year deal for another $8 million if they so choose holding a club option. Plenty of money for Merrifield to splurge on all of the cheesesteak spots in the city.

Side note: Feel free to comment below on which Cheesesteak place is the best in Philadelphia. I have my personal favorite, but I’d love to hear from the readers on this one.
