The Kansas Royals have a gem at second base. This gem is shining as bright as the team can see, yet others don’t. This is both good and bad for the team. The good is that other teams wouldn’t think of expressing interest in it and the bad is that most aren’t even aware it’s that good. Some casual baseball fans aren’t even in tune with how good it is. This gem is Whit Merrifield, talented in oh so many ways.
Many don’t realize this, but White Merrifield has led the majors in hits in the last two full 162 game seasons. Yes, you heard me right. The majors. Don’t believe me? Well in 2018, he had 192 hits. He also had a .304 batting average as well as a major league-leading 45 stolen bases. The Royals leadoff hitter followed it up next year with 206 hits and a .302 batting average. The speedster also led the league in triples with 10.
If Merrifield happened to be on a contending team, he’d be much more of a high profiled player. The little team this season could push through, with new additions like Andrew Benintendi and Michael A. Taylor complimenting Whit on the field. They could be a sleeper team led by Whit at the top of the order. What I find most wonderful about him is he is a 1980s player stuck in the 2020s. It is not that often that you see a top-of-the-order guy like him in this day in age with everyone hitting for power. Essentially this is a player who doesn’t hit for much power, has a high average, and can swipe bags like nobody’s business. The fact that he doesn’t fit the mold of baseball today, leads me to think that this is why he flies under the radar.
