Wayne Rooney: You Have To Build Around Bruno Fernandes

Former Manchester United striker and club legend Wayne Rooney gives his thoughts on what must happen to the club to restore it to its former glory.

“You have to build around Bruno [Fernandes]. He’s the one player with quality. He has got fight in him. I think you keep the young players and Bruno. I think it has to be a massive clearout, it has to be. It’s not going to be in one year but it’s got to be over the next couple of years,” Rooney said on Sky Sports on Wednesday.

“To compete in this league, they need better players and don’t get me wrong, these players are good players and Premier League players. But to compete with Manchester City, with Liverpool, with Arsenal they need better players.”

Manchester United have had a lot of down moments this season, including 14 losses in the season — the most ever in a single season for the club. Players having disagreements with manager Erik Ten Hag, causing internal issues.

To restore glory to the club, Rooney suggests a clearout and start building around the team’s Portuguese midfielder.

Bruno Fernandes currently has 18 G/A in the Premier League this season. The next best players to have similar G/A this season would be youngsters Alejandro Garnacho and Ramsus Roljund, who are both at 11 G/A.

Fernandes and Man U are currently sitting in 8th place, just outside the UEFA Conference League spot with one game left in the season.

United could win hardware this season, as they face club rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 25th; a last hope to save the disaster of a season they’ve had.

Though while winning the Carabao Cup last season, Manchester United has been in a rough patch with ownership issues, poor performances, players and managers beefing. Ten Hag and his issues with Cristiano Ronaldo forced one of the greatest in the sports to leave the club.
