It’s over. The Baltimore Ravens had their 24-game preseason win streak snapped Monday night in a 29-28 loss to the Washington Commanders.
The loss comes just a week after Washington guard Sam Cosmi mocked Baltimore’s historic ride., saying it was a “stupid record.”
To put this into perspective, when the Ravens last lost a preseason game, Tom Brady was being investigated for Deflategate, and Cam Newton was on track to win MVP.
Commanders quarterback Sam Howell looked excellent against a usually stout Ravens defense. Howell completed 19-of-25 passes for 188 yards and a pair of touchdown passes. He also added 17 yards on the ground.
“There’s a lot of pressure, obviously, and we know how important the quarterback position is in the league and how important it is in this area,” Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said when asked if Howell could potentially develop into the franchise quarterback Washington has been seeking for years, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post. “We’ve been looking for one and we have an opportunity to have a guy that has a chance to be a really good football player for us.”
Meanwhile, Ravens third-stringer Josh Johnson was on his 14th different team and his 21st stint on an NFL roster since 2009. He completed 10 passes on 12 attempts for 145 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
Superstar Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin looked elite, but sustained a toe injury late in the second quarter. Rivera said X-rays were negative and that McLaurin will be “treated day by day.”
Safe to say, the Commanders were very happy about ending the streak. When kicker Joey Slye put the football through the uprights in the final moments, he signaled an “L” with his fingers towards the Ravens’ bench before leaping into the embrace of a fellow player. The Commanders’ sideline erupted, raising their arms in exuberant celebration.
What did you think of the streak? Was it really that impressive? Let us know in the comments!
