You already know Kelly McCrimmon is planning something crazy. After losing to the now Western Conference champion Oilers in the playoffs, it seems unlikely that Vegas will operate in a methodical way this offseason. With $9.6 million in the piggy bank, with most of the pieces on the roster already signed, a splash could be on the way. If that happens, maybe Nicolas Hague is the odd man out.
Hague, 26, is a restricted free agent this offseason. After what we saw last year with what the Blues offer sheets, it wouldn’t be surprising if that same thing happened with Hague. It appears Vegas is already getting out ahead of that and shopping him around.
VIA The Fourth Period by David Pagnotta:
“Speaking of Vegas, the Golden Knights have just over $9.6 million in salary cap space and a few decent holes to fill. Word on the street is they are entertaining calls on defenceman Nic Hague, who is set to become a restricted free agent July 1 and is due for a solid paycheck.”
“Multiple sources indicated this week that Vegas has already started to engage in trade discussions involving Hague, who brings size, accountability and a championship pedigree to any club looking to strengthen their defensive corps. Several teams will be poking around, and this should be something to keep an eye on leading up to Draft weekend.”
Vegas already has seven D signed under contract next year. If Hague departs, Kaedan Korczak or Ben Hutton could step into the lineup. It’s far from a lock that Hague departs this offseason, but it could become far more likely if the VGK do win the Mitch Marner sweepstakes.
