Vegas’ Pursuit Of Mitch Marner Was About Team-Building, Not Politics

Marner went from scapegoat, and fans/media couldn’t wait until he was run out of town. Then those same people got mad when he ended up in Vegas and couldn’t believe he left. I never realized how delusional Leafs fans are, but they have something seriously wrong with them.

The Toronto Maple Karen’s are focused on politics and blame gaming. The Vegas Golden Knights are focused on team-building, and Kelly McCrimmon got his guy.

Here’s why that point can’t be disputed, and it came during the Marner introductory presser. A reporter asked McCrimmon if the loss to the Oilers affected his strategy this offseason. This is how McCrimmon responded.

“We would have pursued Mitch Marner if we won the Stanley Cup.”

Bingo.

Losing to the Oilers didn’t matter. They wanted Marner regardless of whether they just won the Stanley Cup. They saw him as a perfect F1 forward to build around and the perfect linemate to get the most out of Jack Eichel. This was about upgrading the team, not dancing around politics based on what happened on the ice.

The Golden Knights will win or lose as a team. The Leafs are too worried about figuring out who to blame. It’s why their culture is rotten. It’s why nobody wants to play for them. Players respect the hell out of the fact that the VGK go for it. It’s why more and more guys want in. It’s why Rasmus Andersson is doing what he’s doing. Culture and team-building. Not BS. Always advance, never retreat. Vegas has an identity, and it’s not hard to spot. That’s why Marner is in Vegas and not in Toronto, despite being from there.
