“Unfinished Beef”: Netflix to Air Hot Dog Eating Contest

Netflix just announced a live hot dog eating contest between Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi—their first matchup since 2009.

When Joey Chestnut arrived on the scene, Takeru Kobayashi was the king of hot dog eating. Kobayashi won Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition every year from 2001-2006. The pair first faced off in 2005, and haven’t competed against each other since 2009. Kobayashi defeated Chestnut in their first two meetings, but Chestnut’s defeat of Kobayashi in 2007 sparked a dynasty. Joey Chestnut has gone on to become the undisputed champ of competitive hot dog eating. He’s taken home 16 titles during the course of his career, and hasn’t lost the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition since 2015.

Joey Chestnut Banned From Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest

The announcement of the contest comes at a time of struggle for the “Michael Jordan of competitive eating.” On June 11, Nathan’s Hot Dogs announced that Chestnut would be banned from their annual competition. Organizers of the event cited Chestnut’s recent deal with vegan brand Impossible Foods, describing the move as siding with a “rival”. In a series of tweets, the reigning champ said he was “gutted” to learn that he had been banned from the competition. He is staying optimistic, though, telling fans “I love you and appreciate you. Rest assured that you’ll see me eat again soon!! STAY HUNGRY!”
