The Ultimate Fighter, the UFC’s hit reality show, is back! If you have never seen the show before, I will break down the general premise for you. Two UFC fighters are the coaches and they each have aspiring UFC fighters on their team. Each week, members of each team compete against one another in a tournament-style bracket. The winner of each season is awarded a huge UFC contract.
The coaches this year are Brian Ortega and Alexander Volkanovski, who are both featherweights. Volkanovski is the champion of the division, and Ortega is next in line for a shot at the title. The rosters this year are as followed: Team Ortega: Daniel Argueta, Liudvik Sholinian, Joshua Rettinghouse, Vince Murdock, Andre Petroski, Tresean Gore, Miles Hunsinger, and Kemran Lachinov. Team Volkanovski: Mitch Raposo, Dustin Lampros, Ricky Turcios, Brady Hiestand, Ryder Newman, Gilbert Urbina, Aaron Phillips, and Bryan Battle.
Each team is comprised of fighters from the bantamweight and middleweight divisions. Each week, a bantamweight and middleweight from each team will compete against each other in an MMA fight. The first week of the show was last week. In the first fight of the season, Andre Petroski took on Aaron Phillips in a middleweight bout. Petroski submitted Phillips via a guillotine choke in the first round to secure the win.
I plan on recapping every episode of this season of the Ultimate Fighter, so stay tuned if you want to know who walks away with a UFC contract.
