UFC Vegas 79 Best Bets

It is time to place bets on UFC Vegas 79. Despite not being filled with star power, the card features several intriguing fights and some solid betting betting lines. That is about all you can ask for when it comes to your standard Saturday Fight Night event.

*All lines taken from DraftKings are accurate as of 12 p.m. ET on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023.*

Dan Ige +170

The UFC Vegas 79 co-main event is a featherweight clash between Dan Ige and Bryce Mitchell. The bout currently has Ige lined as a +170 underdog while Mitchell is a -205 favorite.

In my opinion, this is a very interesting bout. Ige is understandably the ‘dog because he has shown struggles in the grappling realm and Mitchell is a strong grappler. Ige’s flaws on the ground were shown against Mosvar Evloev and Chan Sung Jung. I am not sure that those fights are directly transferable to this bout, however. Firstly, Evloev and Jung are much better on the feet than Mitchell, allowing them to stay safe while using their striking to set up their takedown attempt.

Evloev is also a better grappler than Mitchell. In that bout, despite losing, Ige showed grappling improvements and displayed above-average takedown defense.

On the feet, Ige should dominate. I really respect Ige’s striking and think he is an underrated fighter in the UFC featherweight division. Ige packs a lot of power in both hands, is good at setting up shots and will dig to the body.

Meanwhile, Mitchell has poor striking defense and leaves opportunities to be countered. I think Ige will hurt Mitchell on the feet and attack the body which will lessen the effectiveness of Mitchell’s takedowns while getting him ahead on the scorecards.

This is not a foolproof bet by any means. It is not out of the realm of possibility that Mitchell lands takedowns and controls this fight. Ultimately, the number is the most important thing. At +170, Ige is a solid bet.

I see a very reasonable path to victory and believe he has a chance to pull it off. It is impossible to find a +170 underdog without its flaws and Ige is not different, but at UFC Vegas 79, I am more than willing to take this bet considering the odds available.

Charles Jourdain -142

At UFC Vegas 79, Charles Jourdain is a -142 favorite against Ricardo Ramos. I am a fan of that number and I am willing to bet the money line.

I am expecting this fight to be an exciting battle with a lot of striking. In that type of fight, there are few unranked featherweights that hold an edge on Jourdain.

In terms of skills, I think Jourdain is the more complete boxer and he has the ability to utilize kicks on the outside. I also trust that Jourdain will be able to avoid Ramos’ spinning attacks.

The biggest factors in this fight are that Jourdain a more durable, much tougher and has better cardio, allowing Jourdain to survive in a scrap while attacking the body and forcing Ramos to slow down. That will allow Jourdain to push the pace in the later rounds and find a finish.

Mohammad Usman -142

The final bet that I like on UFC Vegas 79 is for Mohammad Usman to beat Jake Collier. Usman is currently lined as a -142 favorite while Collier is a +120 underdog.

Usman has not had a lengthy UFC career. At 2-0, he is pretty new to the promotion. In his short time, he has shown that he has serious knockout power and wrestling upside.

Collier started his UFC career as a middleweight and slowly worked his way to the heavyweight division. In the highest weight class, he has gone 2-5.

I am interested in betting on Usman in this spot because he has a ton of physical advantages. Usman’s strength and size should help him land takedowns and control Collier. Not to mention, he has serious knockout power.

I do think Collier is the better overall striker. I do not think that will matter, however. If Collier finds success striking, it should force Usman to grapple. A heavy grappling pace should wear on Collier’s gas tank too.

I am not overly happy about laying chalk on Usman. Still, this is one of my favorite bets for UFC Vegas 79 because I believe he has a very winnable matchup.
