A good solid udon joint is always hard to find. Udon isn’t exactly the most popular dish, and thus, there aren’t a lot of restaurants for it.
However, Udon St. Marks in New York City is serving fresh udon that is delicious and refreshing, just how you’d want it! This small and cozy joint can only fit about 30 people in the restaurant, but that shouldn’t stop you from heading over to try their deliciously authentic bowls of udon.
Udon St. Marks is located in, you guessed it, St. Marks place in the Lower East Side. St. Marks is a great street in NYC, as it has authentic Asian spots all throughout. Aside from Udon St. Marks, there’s The Bao, Beard Papas, and many other great finds. Udon St. Marks is no different from these great spots, as its meals are just as tasty and savory as the rest!
Udon St. Marks has a short but simple menu comprised of different variations of a perfect udon bowl. They have the classic udon soup bowl, but also have many other contrasting flavors. There’s curry udon, kara-age udon, nabayeki udon and more.
Along with the udon soup bowls, there are also gyu-don, chicken katsu don, pork katsu don, and more. My favorite part of the menu is their combos that allow you to get a bowl of fresh udon with a side of delicious curry.
All of these different bowls are delicious in their own way, but I came for the soup. The soup is salty, fishy and steaming hot; the noodles are fresh and bouncy, with the perfect chew. They also offer togarashi, which adds the perfect spiciness to an already delectable bowl.
Along with the udon soup bowl, the curry is also another hit. It’s stewed with onions and pieces of ground beef. The chunks of ground beef are flavorful and add depth to the dish. The curry itself is fresh and packed with flavor, and it’s topped with pickled ginger that adds the perfect amount of tang. The curry dish paired with the udon bowl makes a perfectly complemented dish of sweetness, saltiness, and more.
Udon St. Marks is one of NYC’s great udon spots, and I will definitely be coming back.
