The 2024 NBA Draft is considered a weak class but that just means you know there’s going to be a steal during the later portion of the draft. Could Tyler Kolek become a diamond in the rough? Let’s talk about everything you need to know when it comes to the Marquette point guard.

Here is your Tyler Kolek 2024 NBA Draft Profile!

Height: 6’1.25″ (6’2.75″ wingspan, 7’11″ standing reach)

Weight: 196

Age: 24 in March

Position: PG

Kolek, a zero star recruit coming out of high school, had an accomplished collegiate career all things considered. After one year at George Mason, Kolek took his talents to Marquette for the following three years. That includes two appearances on the First Team All-Big East.

Kolek finished things off at Marquette averaging 15.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 7.7 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. That’s on 49.6% shooting from the floor, 38.8% from 3, and 85.1% from the free throw line.

Strengths:

Let’s start here. Kolek led D1 in assists per game. I’d say that matters for something. Kolek is a classic old-school point guard like they took him out of the 70s. Floor general, orchestrator of the offense, point god; whatever you want to refer to it. That’s the type of player Kolek is from a play style perspective.

The shooting is also there. Kolek cashed in on a high rate from downtown. He has a really nice left hand offensively. He’s efficient on two’s as well.

Maybe I’m just makings this up but Kolek feels like he can’t be quantified fully. He’s an intangible kind of guy. You can tell he’s smart and has a knack for hitting clutch shots in the past. He’s a big reason why Marquette was good and has a grinder mentality.

Weaknesses:

It’s easy to talk yourself out of this one. He’s old, slow, not a great athlete, no recruiting background, etc, etc.

Slow footed and not long either. Hard not to see him as a guy teams would go attack for easy buckets. When that’s the case, it’s hard to be super valuable come playoff time.

When you combine all that together, what’s the real ceiling? Even if Kolek pans out, how is it anything more than a stable backup point guard?

Projection: Late First/ Early Second

Like we talked about with Jamal Shead, maybe being a backup point guard isn’t the worst thing in the world. He’s expected to hear his name called somewhere in the late first / second round range.
