Shōgun Hulu TV Show Review

Shōgun is the hot new show on Hulu that everybody seems to be talking about. It’s so popular that future seasons are already in the works. Is this show worth your time? We’re going to talk about it. As always, I’ll do my best to limit the spoilers here.

I have to start here. I absolutely hate subtitles. They’re unavoidable with this show. Everybody in the show is Japanese except for Cosmo Jarvis who plays John Blackthorne. He’s an English sea pilot who finds his way to Japan. He’s the only one we don’t need subtitles for. Everybody else speaks Japanese, which is fair considering the show is based in Japan.

I absolutely hate subtitles but you find a way to get passed them with this show. Mostly because it would be worse acting otherwise. It all makes sense once you get into the show don’t worry.

This show is also supposed to be based around the years 1467-1600. There is a history lesson tied into all of this. Until this point, Japanese people encountered Portuguese people but not English people. I’ll leave it at that until you watch the show. There is a war brewing internally during this time creating a giant mess that you’re going to want to see.

Dave Hulu Review

I’m in on this show. Wouldn’t give it a 10 out of 10 but it’s solid. Good history along with a love story built in. If you’re looking for a show to grind through the dog days of Summer, you can do far worse than this one.
