Sorry, I’m late with these. Too much going on with not enough help. Two big quarterback contracts got handed out and we’re going to talk about both here right now. Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins FINALLY agreed to a contract extension.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:
We don’t have any real official announcement by the Dolphins. Just this Tweet acknowledging the deal did happen.
The official deal is a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension with $167.1 million guaranteed. The current contract Tua was playing on does not get ripped up. It’s $53.1 million in new money but either way would put him behind Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence’s $55 million price tag.
Tagovailoa, 26, led the NFL in passing yards and was second in yards per attempt with a mark of 8.3. A season ago he also led the NFL in yards per attempt, quarterback rating, and touchdown percentage. Oh, and the Dolphins have scored 27.6 points per game with the former Alabama product as the starter and 16.3 PPG in four games that he missed over the last two seasons.
Whatever you think of Tua, the numbers really don’t lie here. The left is a damn good quarterback and he’s given the Dolphins stability at the position for the first time since Dan Marion.
Another note about this deal that should be talked about. It gets Tua back on the market at the age of 31. He’s going to get another pay day given the way the quarterback market keeps shooting through the roof.
