Tristan Wirfs is now a very rich man. The former Iowa product isn’t just rich. Wirfs has inked the biggest extension in the entire history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz was the first to report the news:
The details of the detail are as follows:
Wifs, 25, signs a five-year extension worth $140.6 million. $88.24 million of which is fully guaranteed. It’s an AAV of $28.12 million and that number puts him at number one for the highest-paid tackles in the league. It’s slightly ahead of what Penei Sewell signed for with his extension in Detroit.
Tampa was scheduled to have $25 million in cap space next year. That number is going way down after this new extension is accounted for.
At the end of the day, this is great news if you’re a Bucs fan. More importantly, Jason Licht has shown an ability to keep his high end players and get deals done. Mike Evans and Antoine Winfield also got key extensions done this offseason. Now a franchise tackle is here to stay for the foreseeable future.
Paying good players is a good problem to have. The Bucs could be the Jets. You know, the team that decided Mekhi Becton was a better player than Wirfs. Oh, that’s right, Trey tried to warn you that was going to be a terrible call. Yet, somehow Joe Douglas remains employed and I’m still typing from my couch. I guess that’s the world we somehow live in.
