I do not need to tell you that Trevor Lawrence is an extremely valuable player in dynasty fantasy football leagues, often going within the first three picks in almost every rookie draft. However, Lawrence is being criminally overlooked in redraft leagues, often going very late and very cheap in drafts. I will explain why he is one of the best late-round picks you can make this year.
To start, we all know Lawrence is an extremely talented dual-threat quarterback. His arm, size, athleticism, and mobility make him appear molded for the NFL quarterback position. For fantasy purposes, his rushing ability is of extreme importance as it gives him another way to score fantasy points, giving him both a safe floor in games where he does not throw the ball efficiently and a tremendous ceiling in games that he fully utilizes his talent. With Urban Meyer at the helm drawing up a lot of quarterback option plays, I can easily see Lawrence score six or seven rushing touchdowns, which would be massive for his fantasy production.
Next, it is important to recognize that Jacksonville has weapons and talented weapons at that. D.J Chark, newly-signed Marvin Jones, and Laviska Shenault, who is due for a potential breakout season, coupled with James Robinson and Travis Etienne, definitely provide Lawrence with the playmakers he needs to be successful.
Although the Jaguars’ offense will have a far greater impact on Lawrence’s fantasy value, their abysmal defense should also be beneficial for his production. As the Jaguars will likely find themselves behind in most games, Lawrence will be forced to push the ball downfield and the offense will likely stray away from the run game. This is the perfect recipe for fantasy points, as there is nothing better than a couple touchdowns in garbage time that help you win your week.
Now, I do not recommend drafting Lawrence as your starting quarterback this year, but the best part about his current value is that you do not have to. Draft a more established fantasy quarterback as your starter and then snag Lawrence as your backup. At best, he might even become your starter or give you legitimate trade value, and at worst, you ended up spending very little draft capital on a player who did not work out.
