Travis Kelce plans to retire as a Chief for specific reason

Future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce has now added a second Super Bowl to his extensive resume. The Chiefs All-Pro tallied six receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown in the Kansas City victory.

In a postgame interview with ESPN’s Chris Berman, Steve Young, and Booger McFarland, Kelce credited his success to head coach Andy Reid. Kelce even implied he plans to retire as a Chief because of Reid.

With rumors circulating in recent days about Reid’s potential retirement, the clock could tick faster than expected on Kelce’s career if he is serious.

When asked about the offensive success in the Super Bowl, Kelce replied, “Man it’s a cheat code, the Andy Reid cheat code. He’s dialing up his favorite order every single week, man, and it’s a luxury, man. That’s why you’ll only see me playing for Kansas City my entire career, or for Andy Reid, because I know he’s gonna give me the best opportunity to go out there and have success.”

Kelce praising Reid and crediting him for his success in the NFL is not new, but declaring that he plans to retire as a Chief in order to only play for Reid is a different level of loyalty.

Future Outlook for Kelce and Reid

The future of the Kansas City Chiefs organization seems bright from the outside looking in. They have reached the AFC championship game in five consecutive seasons. The team also has playmakers in pretty much every position group, highlighted by the feared passing duo of Patrick Mahomes to Kelce, a duo that is starting to be considered among the all-time great passing tandems.

While the talent in Kansas City is undeniable, it is the unique coaching style of Reid that brings it all together.

An NFL head coach since 1999, Reid has established himself, other than Bill Belichick, as the most successful coach in the league currently. The 64-year-old has now acquired his second Lombardi trophy after leading the Chiefs to victory on Sunday.

After 24 seasons in charge, it is easy to speculate that Reid’s retirement will come soon. Reid has cemented his legacy as a coach and will be in the Hall of Fame someday. With nothing left to prove, his return as head coach would likely be solely because of passion.

Reid choosing to retire would put Kelce in an awkward spot following his postgame comments. The 10-year pro has already had a first ballot hall of fame career. But after arguably his most productive season yet, it would be a shame for him to retire in his prime.

If Travis Kelce stands by his statements to retire when Reid does, that could happen any year now. Only time will tell if a possible Andy Reid retirement causes Kelce to retire as a Chief.
