Trade Grades: Terry Rozier To Miami, Kyle Lowry To Charlotte

Terry Rozier has been traded to the Heat. Was this a smart move by Miami? Did Charlotte somehow find a way to win this trade? Let’s not beat around the bush because intro paragraphs are stupid and hand out some trade grades!

Heat Acquire Terry Rozier: Grade B

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a Rozier fan. I’ll try my best to not sound like an irrational hater. I just think the guy has zero self-awareness. Never is going to be a winning basketball player.

With that said, he’s a clear upgrade over Lowry at this moment in time. Also, this trade really helps Miami financially. This drops the tax bill in a big way which should theoretically open the door for other moves.

If anyone can fix him it’s the Heat Culture. Rozier will need to buy into the fact that he’s not the best player on the team. I’m not sure that you can convince him of that but Pat Riley might be able to. Rozier has averaged 18.3 shot attempts per game this year. He was at 18.9 the year prior. Jimmy Butler is taking 13.5 right now for Miami.

Will Rozier understand that he needs to be a point guard and not just jack up every shot possible? That’s going to be the biggest hurdle. Also, the first round pick they sent out in 2027 is lottery protected for one season. If Miami falls off for some reason they likely won’t get killed on this deal.

Hornets Acquire Kyle Lowry & 2027 Miami protected first: Grade B

Not sure the Hornets hit a home run. Maybe they could have gotten more than what will likely be a late first round pick. However, Lowry is an expiring and they got Rozier’s contract totally off the books. Gordon Hayward comes off the books too. The Hornets should have cap space to play with next year and won’t have to worry about extensions for Mark Williams or Brandon Miller yet.

This trade will look better if Charlotte can offload Lowry for another asset. I’m just skeptical that’s on the table. Also, you kinda have to give the Hornets credit for signing Rozier. They could have given Kemba Walker a max and instead went with Rozier. A decision that got them this draft pick. What’s fair is fair and that wasn’t an easy call at the time.
