Trade Grades: Lakers Add Luka Doncic, Mavericks Add Anthony Davis

Let’s hand out some trade grades to the shocking Luka Doncic trade between the Mavericks and Lakers. Who won the deal? Let’s talk about it! (Jerome Miron-Imagn Images)

Trade Grades: Lakers Add Luka Doncic, Mavericks Add Anthony Davis

Somehow Shams’ phone wasn’t hacked. The Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis swap is actually a real thing that happened. I still can’t believe this happened and I have a lot to say so screw the intro paragraph. Let’s get right to the trade grades.

Dallas Mavericks (acquire Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and the Lakers’ 2029 first-round pick.)

Grade: F

WTF? I’m pretty sure that was everyone’s first reaction. This trade is as dumb as it gets for the Mavericks, especially when you consider the details that have trickled out since then.

A: The Mavericks didn’t even shop Luka to the highest bidder. They only presented this to the Lakers. Absolutely criminal when you consider Oklahoma City probably would have forked over 10 first rounders.

B: Rudy Gobert go traded for four first rounders + more. Luka goes for one first rounder. I just don’t get it. Anyway you slice it, the Mavs got far less than they could have gotten based on the way teams trade these draft picks.

C: Apparently, the Mavs made this trade because they were done with Luka’s conditioning and health status. So then you turn around and trade for Anthony Davis who is nicknamed street clothes?

D: The age gap on Doncic (25) and Davis (31) alone makes this trade suicidal.

E: Can you imagine how this trade call went?

“Hey, we’ll trade you Luka and we’re close on this trade but we really need Max Christie as the sweetener”.

I can’t imagine being in the Lakers front office and not laughing when the Mavericks people asked for Christie. Not to mention the fact that Christie sucks too.

Is anybody defending this trade from the Mavericks side of this? If I was a Mavs fan I would boycott and never show up again. If their fan base has any pride, they will bad together and do just that. The worst part about this is this trade won’t look terrible this year. But when Kyrie Irving, Klay, and Davis age out of their prime, this trade will go down as being one of the worst in NBA history.

Los Angeles Lakers (acquire Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris)

Grade A+

I’m not sure what there really is to say for the Lakers angle. They acquire one of the best players in the world who hasn’t even fully entered his prime yet. Yes, Anthony Davis is a superstar in his own right but he’s been hurt plenty and is close to being out of his prime. To acquire Luka while only throwing in one extra first rounder is a home run deal anyway you slice it.

The Lakers have a real future again. The LeBron factor shouldn’t even matter here. Luka in LA will be its own recruiting pitch to future free agents. The crazy thing is the Lakers still have a few things they can do to further improve the roster since they didn’t lose all their assets with this deal. Every Lakers fan should be on top of the world today and have every right to be.

Jazz (acquire Jalen Hood-Schifino, the LA Clippers’ 2025 second-round pick, and the Mavericks’ 2025 second-round pick.)

Grade: A

I’m sure a third party was needed for math reasons but I have no idea how the Jazz gave up literally nothing here. They also acquire a former first round with Hood-Schifino. To add two second round picks fo free sure sounds like a win. Only Danny Ainge would find a way to weasel himself in a deal like this.
