Trade Grades: Justin Fields Traded To The Steelers

Justin Fields has been traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but who won the trade? Based on the title, I’m pretty sure that’s what you came here for so I’m not going to waste any time. Let’s hand out those trade grades!

Bears: Grade F

I don’t think it’s necessary to beat this dead horse but yeah… clearly the Bears didn’t do well here. For a guy they traded up for in the draft, they sold him for a literal penny on the dollar. Don’t forget that the Bears gave up the pick that became 7th overall as part of the move up for Fields. They ended up getting a 2025 6th round pick at the end of the day. It doesn’t get much worse than that.

We also know the Bears had no leverage. Everybody is declining that 5th year option. Everybody knows they had to get him out of the building in order to build with Caleb Williams. It is what it is from that standpoint. The problem is this organization clearly never maximized Fields’ talent and they’re going to look really dumb when Pittsburgh gets something out of him. Two things can be true; Fields isn’t ready to be a starter from a throwing aspect, but this team failed him in more ways than one.

Steelers: Grade A-

I’ll be honest; I like this flier. How do you not? I’ve been crushing Pittsburgh for what seems like the last five years for the same thing over and over.

Why won’t they pick a lane?

Why are they so content with being mediocre?

How can an entire fan base continue getting horny off of 9-8 with no playoff wins?

For the first time in a long time there is actually a plan in place. Russell Wilson (despite the fact that I hate his guts) is the bridge. Fields is the long term development piece. The former Ohio State quarterback is still just 25. This is the same guy that beat Trevor Lawrence at the Elite 11. It’s not like he has zero talent. Plus, the Steelers are just never going to find a quarterback with this type of athleticism with where they’re picking in the draft. Even a developmental guy like JJ McCarthy with upside will be gone 15 picks before the Steelers are even on the clock.

Plus, even if Fields turns into nothing, they still got a second round pick for Chase Claypool who turned into Joey Porter Jr. Just call it an extension of that trade for good measure. The only hard part will be pretending that Fields shouldn’t be the starter in Week 11 when all hope is lost.
