Trade grades are in. DK Metcalf has been dealt to the Steelers but who actually won the deal? Let’s have a chat about it! (Daniel Bartel-Imagn Images)

Trade Grades: DK Metcalf Traded To The Steelers

DK Metcalf has been traded to the Steelers and then he signed a lucrative extension to go along with the trade. We already did a fantasy football angle to this transaction. Now let’s get to the trade grades. I very much realize this intro paragraph was incredibly boring but I just got done typing all the notes from the NFL Scouting Combine so cut me some slack! Intro paragraphs are boring and useless anyway so let’s get right to business.

Seahawks: Grade B

Hard to hate this deal for Seattle considering DK requested a trade away from the team. Keep in mind, Seattle picked Metcalf in the second round in 2019. Then got several years of quality production. Then get the 52nd overall pick back. That’s how you do it if you’re a team that’s not in a Super Bowl window.

Add in the Geno Smith part of this and Seattle really has some lucrative draft capital to turn things around. This grade could obviously change if they blow this pick but I think they strength of this draft is the second round. It’s a deep draft without a ton of top end talent. If Seattle nails that pick, this was a savvy piece of business. Obviously, we don’t know the result of that yet so we’ll leave it at a B for now. Check back on my draft grades for an update on this when the time comes.

Steelers: Grade C-

I hate that the Steelers were the team that did this. It feels like a big time sin to give up a second round pick for a wide receiver when you have no answer at quarterback. It’s a huge sin in terms of team building. Something the Steelers clearly don’t care about.

It’s one thing to give up a second rounder for DK. It’s another to give up a premium pick and then hand out a mega contract. Don’t worry, I’m sure George Pickens is thrilled about all of this somewhere. Another problem they now have to deal with and they won’t get a pick nearly as high as the one they gave up for Metcalf in return for Pickens.

This trade feels like a huge waste of time for all parties involved. Outside of Metcalf getting his money, I’m not sure what this accomplishes. It feels like only a matter of time before Metcalf gets incredibly frustrated for what he signed up for. Stubborn Mike Tomlin and a team that wants to grind out wins by running the ball and playing defense while remaining incredibly mediocre.

I love DK the player but it’s hard to like it given where the Steelers are in their team building stage. A team without a quarterback that hasn’t won a playoff game since 2016 just gave up a second round pick for a player that won’t help change any of those things. Getting DK is cool but this landing spot stinks.
