The Core 4 feels like it’s on the verge of being broken up in Leafs land. After coming up short year after year, maybe Mitch Marner just isn’t a playoff type of performer. With one year to go before free agency, could Marner be traded? With all the rumors out there, it certainly feels like something that just might happen.
Here are five possible trade destinations for Marner heading into the 2024 NHL Offseason.
It’s Vegas. We know how they operate. If there is a big fish on the market, they want in. Insiders have already connected the Golden Knights to the Marner situation. Based on where they’re at cap space wise, I just can’t see it happening. Nor do I think it makes sense but that’s a story for another day. But we’ll list them at number five out of sheer respect for the deals they have pulled off in the past.
This trade is going to be a difficult one to get done. Simply put, staying with the Leafs for one more year feels like a strong possibility. We forget how much is going to have to go into this trade. This video really summarizes what we’re working with here.
Marner is from Toronto, has a full no-move clause, and wants to test free agency. Good luck navigating all of that and finding a trade that makes sense.
Like Vegas, Nashville is another no-state tax spot that has interest in Marner. The only difference is the Preds have way more cap flexibility to pull something off. Could it even be part of a big blockbuster deal that sends Juuse Saros the other way? Having a top of Forsberg, O’Reilly, and Marner sounds intriguing.
Utah has a ton of cap space and they’re likely looking to make a splash in their inaugural season. They also need to fill out their entire blue line for what that’s worth. A trade for Marner is certainly one way to get the new fans engaged though.
The Blackhawks must decide when they want to start turning the corner. They have more cap space than they know what to do with. Having Connor Bedard flanked by Marner sounds like a good start to doing just that. For years it was Marner to Matthews. This duo could be even better as crazy as that is to say. They have young pieces that can be moved out in this type of deal too.
