Tony Khan Reportedly Grants Former WWE Superstar Release From AEW

Former WWE superstar Malakai Black requested his release from AEW back in August, with reports stating the decision was made for mental health reasons. AEW denied his request to be released that same month. It has also been reported that he wanted out because of the way he was getting booked in AEW. As reported by Fightful Select, Black has now been granted his release from the company.

Various talent in AEW has told Fightful Select that Black was done with the company and that he did in fact get his release. Sources from AEW have said that the release is conditional, which is unusual for AEW to do. Typically, AEW doesn’t really release talent and the release requests get handled case by case. Tony Khan really wanted to keep Malakai Black in the company, hence the release on a conditional basis.

Fightful Select also reported that measures were taken to try to salvage the relationship between Black and AEW, which involved a meeting with the wrestler. Ultimately, AEW decided to grant his release since it was what Black really desired. Black was seen blowing a kiss and bowing to the crowd at AEW All Out this past weekend and many speculated what it meant, but now it’s clear. AEW told Fightful Select that the door remains open for Black to return to the company.

Poor Booking Decisions

Malakai Black has been a part of some poor booking decisions since arriving in AEW. He has yet to hold any title in the company. Most recently, House of Black got eliminated from the AEW trios tournament before the final round. Also, House of Black lost a trios match to Miro, Sting, and Darby Allin at All Out. Black is one of the best wrestlers in the world and deserves to get treated as such. Black’s future is unclear, but we hope he gets better and gets the help he needs. His health is by far the most important thing.
