According to the Tennessee Titans team website, the Titans plan on bringing back their Houston Oilers roots in form of a throwback uniform for a home game this season.
We don’t know exactly what these new uniforms will look like just yet.
Tennessee last wore the Oilers throwback uniforms in 2009 for an away game in Foxborough. The 0-5 Titans got murdered by Tom Brady’s Patriots, 59-0.
The Titans were the Houston Oilers for 37 seasons before they relocated to Nashville in 1998. They were the Tennessee Oilers for a season before deciding on the Titans before the 1999 season.
“The exact game is still TBD, but I’ve already said I suspect it will be for the game vs the Texans. Wouldn’t that make the most sense?” Said Titans Writer/Editor Jim Wyatt in response to a fan’s query.
No, Jim, that doesn’t make the most sense to be honest. Why would you have two “Houston” teams out there? That wouldn’t make any sense! The Titans should find a team that the Oilers were actually rivals with and wear the uniforms against them. Like the Steelers or Colts, or something. Having Houston vs. Houston would look like a couple of kids playing a game of Madden.
In any event, when the NFL brought back alternate helmets in 2022- meaning that teams can wear more than one type of helmet during the season- teams got creative and started rolling out some awesome uniforms. We saw it last season with the Saints, Bengals, and Commanders among others.
Some teams are going with the Titans’ throwback wave as well, as the Buccaneers announced they’re bringing back the creamsicle uniforms.
Hopefully, the product on the field is as good as the uniforms. I doubt it though, since Tennessee is currently in the process of blowing it up, and may reach a boiling point with looming Derrick Henry trade talks.
