Timo Meier says ‘I want to win’ after being traded to New Jersey Devils

(Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports)

Newly acquired Devils forward, Timo Meier is excited to join his new squad after losing ways this season

The Timo Meier sweepstakes are over! Finally, the New Jersey Devils landed their “big fish” trade target in Meier and the former San Jose Shark already has his eyes on winning, according to the New Jersey Devils’ press release.

Meier, who is 26 years old, is set to be a free agent this upcoming summer. That is why the Sharks shipped him off to New Jersey before the deadline because they didn’t want to extend him with a big contract. Besides the point, Meier is a New Jersey Devil, and he couldn’t be more excited to win with them this season.

“You see them play. They’re an exciting team to watch,” Meier said, via Devils press release. “They’re a tough team to play against. For me, to get an opportunity to join a team like that with a lot of young guys that are stars in this league and really, really good players, to join them is a good opportunity for me.”

This last week of trade rumors has been mayhem for hockey fans and will continue to be. Rumors speculated that Meier was on his way to either New Jersey, Las Vegas, Winnipeg or Carolina. None of those teams outside of the Devils gave up as much as the Devils, apparently. But, if you look at what the Devils gave the Sharks for Meier, you would be shocked.

Meier has felt the rumors these last few weeks as him being traded was inevitable. In the Devils’ press release, Meier expressed his emotions.

“It’s definitely been a crazy day. A lot of emotions,” Meier said, via Devils press release. “Being (in San Jose) for seven years and having this new chapter coming my way is definitely very exciting. It’s a special day. I’ve heard good things about the New Jersey Devils, not just their team, the organization as well and also their fanbase. I’m excited to get this started.”

Already in this season, Meier has tallied a whopping 31 goals and 21 assists in 57 games. Pair him with his fellow Swiss forward Nico Hischier and it’s a wrap. Don’t forget to mention the potential Hart Trophy winner Jack Hughes in the mix, as well as Dougie Hamilton. Fantasy hockey players, I suggest that you pick up one of those three guys because their numbers are about to inflate to the moon.
