I’m an Irv Smith believer. The numbers to this point aren’t eye jarring but it usually takes tight ends the longest to put up big time fantasy production. The former Alabama product has been lying in the weeds waiting for his time to come. If you’re a fantasy owner looking to buy low on a tight end, Irv Smith is the name to keep in mind.
Smith is a player I’ve hyped up in the past on multiple occasions. I thought he was the best tight end in his draft class. Even a year ago I wrote a piece on Smith because I just felt like that breakout was coming. The truth of the matter is, as long as Kyle Rudolph was on the roster, we were never going to see the true breakout season. Well… that’s finally the case in 2021.
Rudolph is in New York now with the Giants. For the first time ever, Smith is the true number one tight end. Even if Smith was the better player a year ago, there is no more time share which means everything. Smith should theoretically swallow Rudolph’s production.
Even in a part time role last year, Smith had five touchdowns. I think we could easily be looking at a 900 yard season with 8-10 scores. Yes, Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen are on the roster. However, there’s really no depth behind them. The necessary target share should be there with Smith.
It’s hard to find a reliable tight end in fantasy. If you miss out on the Travis Kelce, George Kittle, and Darren Waller group, picking your poison late with Smith is the way to go.
