Thomas Tuchel is set to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the Season

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have announced that they will be parting ways with manager Thomas Tuchel at the conclusion of the 2023-24 Bundesliga season in a statement on the club’s website.

The German-born manager had a contract set until the end of the 2024-25 season but will relieve Tuchel of his duties following an abysmal season by Bayern’s standards.

“We have agreed that we will end our working relationship at the end of this season,” Tuchel said. “Until then, I will of course continue to do everything I can with my coaching staff to achieve maximum success.”

News of the separation has come after a 3-2 loss to 11th-placed Bochum. This was Bayern’s third consecutive loss in all competitions.

The 2023-24 season has been one to forget for Bayern. Through 22 matches in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich sit eight points back of league leaders Bayer Leverkusen. This would end their streak of 11 straight German league titles.

Tuchel’s side is on pace for their first trophyless season since the 2011-12 season when they finished runner-up in the Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League, and DFB-Pokal. They have already been eliminated from the DFB-Pokal in just the second round by third-division side 1. FC Saarbrücken.

While they have qualified for the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League knockout stage, they lost their first Round of 16 match against Italian side Lazio 1-0.

“Every individual at the club is expressly called upon to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and Bundesliga,” said Bayern Munich CEO, Jan-Christian Dreesen. “In the Champions League in particular, after losing 1-0 in the first leg at Lazio, we are convinced we will reach the quarter-finals at a packed Allianz Arena with our fans behind us.”

Tuchel took over the reins of Bayen midway through the 2022-23 season replacing Julian Nagelsmann. He ended up guiding Bayern to another Bundesliga title after his appointment in March 2023.

Before being hired at Bayern, Tuchel had managed Borussia Dortmund, PSG, and Chelsea and won titles everywhere he had been. This includes winning the 2020-21 Champions League title with Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel and Bayern Munich next play on Saturday, Feb. 24 when they host 5th-placed RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.
