This Is Who Should End Gunther’s WWE Intercontinental Championship Reign

Gunther has taken the WWE by storm since joining the main roster. He started in NXT UK in 2019 and joined the main roster in 2022. He has always proven himself to be one of the most dominant wrestlers on the planet, so it makes perfect sense why he transitioned to the main roster in WWE so nicely.

Currently, Gunther is in the middle of a historic title reign. He has now held the WWE Intercontinental Championship for 361 days, the fifth-longest reign in the history of the WWE.

With a reign this monumental, it’s important to have the right person end it. So, who should end Gunther’s Intercontinental Championship Reign?

Ilja Dargunov

Ilja Dragunov is the person who should dethrone Gunther. Dragunov spent a couple of years in NXT UK and recently made his debut in NXT. Furthermore, he’s a former NXT UK Champion, and the person he beat to win the title is none other than Gunther. Not only did Dragunov beat Gunther for the NXT UK Championship, but he also ended his historic reign with that title.

Similar to how he’s been established in WWE, Gunther was extremely dominant in NXT UK. He held the NXT UK Championship for 870 days, a monumental title reign. However, this incredible feat doesn’t really get recognized by WWE. Nevertheless, it makes sense for Dragunov to dethrone Gunther because he did it before.

When you build someone up like they have been doing with Gunther, there has to be someone believable to beat them. And right now the only person is Ilja Dragunov. Although Dragunov isn’t on the main roster in WWE, there are rumors that he will get called up later this year. I’m extremely confident that Gunther is going to break the record for the longest WWE Intercontinental Championship reign, which is the Honky Tonk Man who held the title for 454 days.

Breaking The Record

In order for Gunther to break the record, he would have to hold the title for 93 more days. Which means he would have to hold it until Sept. 7 of this year. While there hasn’t been an official premium live event announced for September, there have been rumors that WWE will hold one in India.

With the way Gunther has been built, his title reign isn’t ending any time soon. Furthermore, with Ilja Dragunov already ending a historic reign of his, plus with the rumors that he will get called up later this year, Dragunov is the person to dethrone Gunther.
