It seems that one of CD Projekt Red’s next projects in the Witcher series might never see the light of day. The company has filed an impairment lawsuit against the developers of The Witcher Sirius, The Molasses Flood, over what they say are financial reasons.
In an announcement by CD Projekt Red, the company states that the amount of money The Molasses Flood has burned through isn’t acceptable. The announcement says that the company’s 2022 expenses of 33.4 million Polish Zloty, or almost $7.7 million, was too much of a burden on the company. The Witcher Sirius and its costs have been deemed too much for CD Projekt Red at this time.
While CD Projekt Red has denied the cancellation of The Witcher Sirius. The next steps regarding the game are up in the air. But given the company’s history of cancelling outsourced Witcher games. It might just be the beginning of the end for The Molasses Flood’s project.
The Witcher Sirius was announced back in October of 2022. Alongside a handful of other games including some other Witcher titles. As part of this the company decided to outsource them to other studios the company owned. Meanwhile CD Projekt Red focused on its own major projects.
But with the future of The Witcher Sirius now heading down an uncertain path, who knows just what’s going to happen to those other outsourced games. Will the financial situation affect the other outsourced projects? Or was The Molasses Flood’s title just too much for the company?
For now, fans will just have to wait. But the impairment lawsuit is bad sign for the future of this project.
