As all of you know Don Chach loves stats. As a kid, I used to be able to tell you the stats of any baseball player you could think of during any year of his career. It’s one of the reasons why I love baseball so much. However, it wasn’t until I met the coming himself, Trey Daubert, when I finally learned that stats aren’t everything. It’s about fucking winning people. Apparently the writers who vote for the MLB regular season awards forgot about this.
There is no reason in the world that Mike Trout should have won the MVP award. Is Mike Trout the best player in baseball? Yes, he is and it’s not even close. He is a statistical anomaly, and on pace to break almost every record there ever was. But if you can sit there and tell me that he is more valuable than Alex Bregman I’m going to have you drugged tested and hospitalized. Bregman’s team went to the World Series and lost in Game 7 to a Cinderella Washington Nationals team. Mike Trout’s team came in 4th place in their own division. It didn’t even matter that Trout missed the last month of the season, because the Angels were in 4th place when he got hurt! The whole team sucks and there is nothing Mike Trout can do about it. He should have NEVER signed that long term deal, because the Angels are never going to make the playoffs while he is on the team.
Now you may be saying, “Well Don Chach, if you’re such a stats guy, explain why Trout has such better stats than Bregman.” Alright lets look at their stats. In 2019, Mike Trout had 137 hits, 45 home runs, 104 RBIs, and a .291 BA in 134 games. Pretty good if I do say so myself. Looking at about a hit a game, and as always Trout completely crushed the ball, leading the AL in OBP, SLG, and OPS. But was he that much better than Alex Bregman? Bregman had 164 hits, 41 homeruns, 112 RBIs, and a .296 BA in 156 games. He also led the league in walks and helped his team advance to their second World Series in 3 years. That’s value. Bregman didn’t miss a lot of time, and when he did his team suffered. That’s value. He literally beat Trout in most statistical categories as well. Complete bullshit and an attempt by the MLB to continue to push for their face of the league.
Honestly, Mike Trout is probably going to retire as one of the top 3 baseball players in the history of the game. We are watching history every single time that he walks onto the diamond. You have to respect greatness when you are watching it, but for the 2019 season Trout was by no means valuable to the Angels. In my opinion, he hurts them by being on the team.
