Manchester United missed the chance to go back top of the Premier League table on Wednesday, losing 2-1 to bottom side Sheffield United. To most fans, this is a missed opportunity but you move on to the next game and look to improve. For that small minority of complete morons though it’s a chance to show their true racist colors. The mindless idiots are back.
After the shock defeat, Manchester United players Anthony Martial and Axel Tuanzebe were met with racial abuse on Instagram and Twitter respectively. It’s yet another example of how racism remains in the beautiful game despite attempts to remove it. It’s becoming harder and harder to even refer to it as the beautiful game anymore.
United came out in support of their players with captain Harry Maguire tweeting:
While Marcus Rashford simply tweeted a picture with the word ‘Brothers’.
Manchester United also released a statement Thursday morning saying:
“Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted by the racial abuse received by players via social media after last night’s game.”
“We utterly condemn it and it is encouraging to see other fans condemn this on social media also.”
“Manchester United has zero-tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaigning against it through our All Red All Equal initiative.”
“Identifying these anonymous mindless idiots remains problematic. We urge social media platforms and regulatory authorities to strengthen measures to prevent this kind of behavior.”
Manchester United Statement
Strong words, but now is the time for action. This has been going on for far too long and is not just evident in Football. It’s all over the world in every corner and crevice. Now is the time to seek it out and kill it and the only way to do that is by openly talking about and condemning it.
It doesn’t matter if it’s in public or online these people should be named and shamed. They should also be banned from ever attending another event again. If you don’t believe this then you are part of the problem.
