The Lakers Championship Window Isn’t Closing, It’s Slammed Shut

The Lakers Championship Window Is Closed

LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers lost in the first round of the 2021 NBA Playoffs to the Phoenix Suns yesterday. It marks the first time in James’ career that he has ever lost in the first round. But come on, let’s be honest with ourselves here. Are we really THAT surprised that they lost? This is not a competitive roster I don’t care what you have to say about it. Unless the Lakers front office makes some serious changes to this team, their championship window is closed for the foreseeable future. Let me give yall a few reasons why this is the case.

Reason #1: ADisney or Street Clothes, Whichever You Prefer

God, both of those are such good nicknames for Anthony Davis. He is reason number one why they won’t contend again. I know what you’re thinking: Garrett this team won the championship last year. Correct, in the bubble where we have seen the real frauds in a real season. The fact of the matter is this season proved Davis can not stay healthy. Davis missed 36 games this season and has missed a total of 108 before joining the Lakers. The extended layoff going into the bubble did Davis well and let his aching body rest up. This season proved he just isn’t built to last a full season. Maybe the Lakers should consider moving on from Anthony Davis and looking more towards the future.

Reason #2: Who The Hell Is On This Roster Aside From James And Davis?

I will bet you $20 right now that you can’t name me half of the Lakers bench. I’ll send you my Venmo. When you have guys like Alfonzo McKennie or Devontae Cacok on your bench, you’re doomed. Useless role players like Jared Dudley or Markieff Morris getting minutes will not help your team win anything. The only good, young player they have is Talen Horton-Tucker. You read that right, Kyle Kuzma should sign somewhere in China next year because he just isn’t built for the NBA. Imagine thinking he is the untouchable one from Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and himself. Wild. There is no one else reliable on this roster if someone like James has an off night or Davis is out like usual.

Reason #3: The Western Conference Is Getting Stronger By The Year

Look at the teams remaining in the Western Conference Playoffs, the Phoenix Suns have a great young core of Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton and veteran leadership in Chris Paul. The Denver Nuggets have this year’s MVP in Nikola Jokic, rising star Michael Porter Jr. and Jamal Murray, who is currently sidelined with a torn ACL injury. Also have to consider the Utah Jazz, led by Donovan Mitchell and defensive specialist Rudy Gobert and a deep bench. Last but not least either the Dallas Mavericks with Swiss Army Knife Luka Doncic or the Los Angeles Clippers with their star duo of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Not to mention great up-and-coming teams like the Memphis Grizzlies or the New Orleans Pelicans. Lurking in the shadows as well as the Golden State Warriors, who once Klay Thompson comes back will be back to their old ways.

Reason #4: LeBron Is No Spring Chicken

I hate to break it to all you Lakers fans, but LeBron James is 36 years old and will start to regress from here. I mean, you all saw him walking back on defense last night towards the end of the game. Here’s the clip if you missed it.

James suffered his first “serious injury” of his career this season, spraining his ankle and missing 20 games this season. He just never really seemed to be back at 100% and that’s partly due to his age. The older he gets, the slower he becomes and these injuries will pester him all season long. His days of carrying mediocre rosters to championships are over, it is clear he needs all the help he can get. The current Lakers roster won’t do that for him.

It was a nice run while it lasted, Lakers fans. You got your fraud ring last year inside the bubble, but just like the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics, you were exposed as the frauds you are. The championship window is slammed shut, and it won’t be opened unless the front office addresses a bounty of issues this team clearly has this off-season.
