The 2024-2025 offseason has thus far been a pretty exciting one. Multiple big-name players have signed huge contracts with new teams looking to take that leap to the next level and bring home a World Series. Arguably, though, the team that has improved the most so far has been the Boston Red Sox. Which could mean trouble for the rest of the American League.
Last year was a weird one for Red Sox fans. Expectations were low going into the year with how young the team was. But quickly, the Red Sox showed they wouldn’t lie down and call the 2024 season a complete loss, finishing the year 81-81.
They got excellent production out of their young guys, with Jarren Duran emerging as a legitimate star in this league. Wilyer Abreu was another young guy who stepped up, posting a .781 OPS with 15 home runs during his rookie year.
The pitching was where the issues started to arise. Tanner Houck had a fantastic year, earning his first-ever All-Star selection to the tune of a 3.12 ERA. The problem was that outside of Houk, it became hard to find the next consistent arm in the rotation.
Many expected it to be Brayan Bello after his pretty strong 2024 campaign. But he just never really took that next step during 2024. Kutter Crawford looked like the answer for the first half of the year but cooled off as the season went on.
Now, I bring this all up because the thing the Red Sox addressed most this offseason was pitching. They started by signing a couple of guys like Patrick Sandoval and Walker Buehler. Two solid arms but doesn’t move the needle to much.
That was until the Red Sox made their big offseason move, trading for Garrett Crochet in a massive five-player trade. I won’t go too much into the trade. Matt already did a good enough job of that, but Boston gave up A Lot to bring in Crochet. But they desperately needed another front-end guy, and they got just that.
A one-two punch from Tanner Houk and Garrett Crochet immediately takes the pressure off the rest of the rotation. It can quickly turn the Red Sox’s biggest weakness last year into their biggest strength. But I don’t think the Red Sox are done yet. It’s that notion has me thinking they could make some serious noise next year.
Aside from needing another front-end arm. The Red Sox lineup needed another bat. Another guy who could give them 25+ home runs in the middle of the lineup. A guy like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. who is already currently directly linked to the Red Sox. It’s clear that the Blue Jays arent close to finding a number both sides agree to. Vlad himself has even said he would love to play for the Red Sox and wants to be a part of a winning culture. So, really, everyone is now wondering what the hold-up is.
Trey has been banging his head against the wall, wanting the Red Sox to sign Vlad Jr, and I can’t say I blame him. It would solve many of the current issues this lineup has and immediately turn it into one of the deepest lineups in the American League.
Pair that with the improvement they should see on the pitching end, and it’s easy to fall in love with the 2025 Boston Red Sox. I mean, Garrett Crochet already has.
This Red Sox team is ready to break out, crazy thing is they still have guys prepared in the farm system. It’s been some down years by Red Sox fan’s standards, but slowly, that front office has built an impressive farm system, and now they have started to combine that homegrown talent with the big market that is Boston.
This likely isn’t the year the Red Sox win it all, but I think they will take a significant step in 2025. Especially after signing either Vladimer Guerro Jr or Alex Bregman. Even if they can’t, this is a team that has improved vastly, and it will show during the 2025 season.
