Terence Crawford, Errol Spence Jr. fight booked for July 29

It is about time. For years, boxing fans have asked to see a welterweight unification bout between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. That wish has been granted as contacts have been signed and the fight is officially booked, ESPN’s Mike Coppinger reported Thursday.

The bout is set to take place on July 29 in Las Vegas, Nev., at the T-Moblie Arena and will be airing on Showtime pay-per-view.

Crawford and Spence are two of the best boxers on the planet. Crawford (39-0, 30 KOs) is currently No. 3 in the Ring Magazine pound-for-pound rankings. Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) sits one spot behind his foe at No. 4.

This bout will serve as a welterweight unification bout. Crawford holds the WBO World Welterweight Title while Spence holds the IBF, WBC and IBO World Welterweight Titles. Therefore, the winner will walk away as the undisputed welterweight champion.

There is also a legitimate chance that we see multiple fights between Crawford and Spence since the contract includes a bidirectional rematch clause. Considering the impact this fight will have on each fighter’s career, it is likely that the loser will utilize the clause.

Despite the wait, Crawford, 35, and Spence, 33, are each still in their primes. Thankfully, Crawford and Spence managed to agree to contractual terms to make this fight happen before either fighter regressed from their peak.

This year has been a sensational year for boxing. Typically, boxing struggles to book the fights that fans want to see. As overly optimistic as it may seem, those issues have not come to fruition as often recently. It began when Gervonta Davis fought Ryan Garcia. To a lesser extent, Devin Haney’s fight against Vasiliy Lomachenko was another bright spot.

That said, Crawford vs. Spence has been the white whale of boxing for several years. At the moment, boxing may be in its best position in recent memory.

Hopefully, boxing capitalizes on its momentum. As unlikely as it seems, it is time for Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk to fight. Additionally, the lightweight division is on fire as Haney, Davis and Shakur Stevenson are all in line for a super fight this year.

July 29 will be an amazing day for combat sports fans. In the boxing ring, Crawford and Spence will finally meet. In MMA, UFC 291 will take place which is headlined by a highly anticipated rematch between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje.
