Tee Higgins requests trade from Bengals

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins has requested a trade away from the organization, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter first reported Monday.

Higgins was franchise-tagged by the team last week, but the two sides have apparently been unable to lock down a long-term extension that would keep Higgins in Cincinnati for the foreseeable future. This year’s wide receiver franchise tag was worth $21.8 million.

Higgins is arguably the best No. 2 wideout in football. He was limited to just 12 games last year due to injury, but underperformed (to his standard) when he was on the field. He had just 42 catches for 656 yards and five touchdowns–a season removed from his second consecutive 1,000-yard season, where he tied his career in catches (74) and set his career high in touchdowns (7).

The two teams have until July 15 to work out a new long-term deal if a trade doesn’t already occur before then. Possible destinations for Higgins could be the New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals–who own the No. 4 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft–among plenty others.

In four seasons with Joe Burrow–one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL–he’s hauled in 257 catches for 3,684 yards and 24 touchdowns. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, but I understand wanting to be the premier wideout instead of the second fiddle alongside Ja’Marr Chase, even though he’ll possibly attract more attention elsewhere.
