T.J. McConnell signs four-year extension with Pacers

Guard T.J. McConnell signed a four-year, $45 million extension with the Indiana Pacers, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski first reported Friday.

The Pacers have now extended both of their backup point guards this offseason; Andrew Nembhard inked a three-year, $59 million extension in late July. Indiana also did business by signing Pascal Siakam, Obi Toppin and James Johnson to new deals while adding James Wiseman to the mix.

The percentage of cap McConnell, 32, will take up will continue to decrease with his new. For 2024-25, he’s on the books for $9.3 million (5.44 percent), according to Spotrac; his new deal, which is projected to start at $10.0 million, will never account for more than 5.4 percent of the cap (as it’s projected) through 2028-29, the last year of his new deal.

When Haliburton missed time in the postseason due to injury, both McConnell and Nembhard showed out. McConnell averaged 11.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 5.1 assists last season, shooting 48.6 percent from the floor on 52.2 percent true shooting during their ECF run. In the regular season, he finished seventh in Sixth Man of the Year voting, tallying 10.2 points and 5.5 assists on 55.6/40.9/79.0 shooting splits.

The Pacers will have six players on contract through 2026-27: Tyrese Haliburton, Siakam, Toppin, McConnell, Nembhard and second-round rookie Johnny Furphy (team option). We’ll see what happens with Myles Turner, Bennedict Mathurin, Ben Sheppard and Aaron Nesmith, among others, but the majority of their core is locked up for the foreseeable future.

Indiana’s not always the most popular free-agent destination. Though with Haliburton, you never know if they might pluck one or two big names in the coming offseasons.
