Former UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic announced his retirement from MMA at UFC 309. The most accomplished UFC heavyweight of all time went out on a loss to the undisputed GOAT Jon Jones.
Miocic, 42, announced his retirement in his UFC 309 octagon interview.
“I’m done,” Miocic said. “I’m hanging them up. I’m retiring. Thank God.”
Miocic’s retirement will go down as one of the most on-brand retirements ever. It was a short statement and he did not even bother to leave his gloves in the octagon.
The ending of Miocic’s career did not go to plan. It would have been remarkable to beat Jones and regain the heavyweight title. That said, his legacy was set in stone regardless of the outcome.
It should not be considered a surprise that Miocic called it a career at UFC 309. At 42 years old, it is clear he did not have much gas left it the tank. That is simply the unfortunate reality of MMA.
Miocic had a legendary heavyweight career. The Cleveland, Ohio native recorded three heavyweight title defenses which gold standard for the division. In total, he was a two-time champion and defended the belt four times.
Miocic has a sensational resume with wins over some of the best heavyweights of all time. At 20-5, he picked up wins over Daniel Cormier, Francis Ngannou, Junior Dos Santos, Alistair Overeem, Fabricio Werdum, Andrei Orlovski, Mark Hunt, and others.
Miocic is an all-time great fighter with an amazing legacy. It is a guarantee that Miocic will eventually be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. The only heavyweight in MMA history that can be compared to Miocic is Fedor Emelianenko.
