Chan Sung Jung retires at UFC Singapore

At UFC Singapore, Chan Sung Jung AKA ‘The Korean Zombie’ announced his retirement from MMA. The final bout of his career did not go as planned as he suffered a knockout loss to Max Holloway but in typically Korean Zombie fashion he threw down for the entire fight and went out on his shield.

Jung is a legend of the featherweight division. Prior to joining the UFC, he fought in the WEC twice. In 2023, he was one of the few WEC fighters left in the UFC. In extension to that, he has fought in the UFC featherweight division since the weight class’ inception in 2010. That in itself makes Jung an important piece in MMA history.

The name Jung is scattered across the UFC history books. ‘The Korean Zombie’ garnered his nickname through his insane toughness and willingness to throw down. That caused his bout against Dustin Poirier to win Fight of the Year in 2012. On top of that, his fights against Yair Rodriguez and Leonard Miller were on the shortlist for that award too. In terms of individual performances, he was the first person to land a twister in the UFC and has a seven-second knockout on his resume.

Jung was never able to win a UFC championship, but that is a testament to the strength of the UFC featherweight division rather than an inditement on his skills. Jung lost title bouts to Jose Aldo and Alexander Volkanovski. In both cases, he was on the wrong side of historically great talent.

At the end of the day, Jung walks away from MMA at age 36 with a 17-8 record.

Jung joins the long list of legends to retire from MMA in 2023. Thus far into the year Amanda Nunes, Jorge Masvidal, Glover Teixeira, Mauricio Shogun Rua, Kevin Lee, Robbie Lawler, and more have announced their retirement.
